What Your Dog MUST not Eat.

It is important to know what your dog should NOT eat.   If you watch the Australian show, “Bondi Vet,” you will know that many dogs come into his clinic in a sick condition.   Many times, it is what they have eaten.

dogsMost dogs love food, and they’re especially attracted to what they see us eating.

Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark may contain a toxic which is a poison.  Avocados go into human salads and not into your dog.  If a dog eats an avocado, he or she may have problems breathing and even death.

Bread Dough

Sometimes, kid eat raw bread dough – don’t ask me why, but if a dog eats it be prepared that the dough can expand in the dogs stomach and cause much pain.

Vets see really sick dogs around the Easter, Christmas and Halloween holidays.  Even on Valentine’s Day, dogs can get fallen chocolate or chocolate that is left on the table.   Dogs that eat chocolate can get seizures and death.

Be Careful withTurkey dogs

What IS NOT good for dogs are turkey skin, bones or turkey fat. Also, make sure that no onions have come in contact with the turkey since onions ARE toxic to dogs.

Candy and Gumdogs

Candy, gum, toothpaste, baked goods, can cause in a dog’s blood sugar levels.  This can seriously affect the dog’s liver and result in seizures. Eating chocolate with the nuts will make symptoms worse, possibly leading to death.

Grapes and Raisinsdogs

Grapes and raisins have recently been associated with the development of kidney failure in dogs.

Milk and Other Dairy Products

On a hot day, it may be tempting to share your ice cream cone with your dog. But if he could, he’d thank you for not doing so. Milk and milk-based products can cause diarrhea and other digestive upset, as well as set up food allergies (which often show up as itchiness).

It’s not a good idea to share salty foods like chips or pretzels with your dog. These can result in vomiting, depression and seizures and even death.

If Your Dog Eats What It Shouldn’t

It’s a smart idea to always keep the numbers of your local vet, the closest emergency clinic, and the Animal Poison Control Center  — where you know you can find them in an emergency. And, if you think your dog has gotten into something toxic, call for emergency help at once.

Jim the Wonder Dog – Almost Human Intelligence

If you are in Marshall, Missouri (USA), go and  see “Jim the Wonder Dog Memorial Garden” and a wonderful bronze statue dedicated to this incredible animal.

The story of Jim begins on March 10, 1925 when he was born into a litter of LLewllyn setters. Jim was sold to Sam VanArsdale for less than his brothers and sisters. He was considered less valuable.   Jim’s looks proved to be deceptive because later he would be featured in Ripley’s “Believe It or Not.”

Jim with his owner, Sam

The Hunting Dog of the Country (USA)

When it was time for training Jim to hunt, Sam sighed. Jim just lay in the shade watching the other dogs train. Sam took Jim out intending to teach him himself. To Sam’s utter amazement, Jim came to a covey of quail and stood still (called a point) and waited for Sam’s gun to shoot. Sam told him to “fetch” and Jim came back with the bird. Sam was an avid hunter and kept meticulous records of Jim’s retrieval of birds which exceeded 5,000. Outdoor Life Magazine termed him, “The Hunting Dog of the Country.”

The Incredible Intelligence of Jim

It was a very hot day and Sam said casually, “Jim, let’s rest under the hickory tree.”   Now, there were many varieties of trees and Sam wanted to see if Jim really could distinguish a hickory tree. Sam ordered Jim to go to the black oak. He did.

Then, Sam ordered Jim to go to the following trees: walnut, cedar, white oak, sumac and even to a tin can. Jim obeyed.

Sam raced home and explained this uncanny ability to his wife, Pearl. She told Sam not to tell others, but he did!

Hotel Show

Sam managed the local hotel in Marshall, Missouri and he was proud to demonstrate Jim’s mysterious talent. Jim could go out on the street and identify a car by its make, colour, or license plate. In a crowd, Jim could locate a “Man who sells hardware” or a person who “takes care of sick people.” He carried out instructions given to him in foreign languages or in shorthand. He could understand Morse Code. One day, Sam told Jim to go to the girl with the red polka dot dress. Jim did not move. There were two girls with red polka dot dresses, but when Sam added, “with a red bow in her hair,” Jim approached the right girl.

The Powers of Prediction

Jim was very accurate when it came to predictions. He was able to predict the gender of an unborn baby and the number of kittens and their sex in a cat’s womb.

No Tricks

Jim underwent testing from various veterinarians and scientists.

His intelligence was authentic and baffling. One observer stated that Sam had asked Jim, “What would I do if I had a stomach ache?” Jim wagged his tail and wandered over to Dr. Savage, the town physician. He gently nudged the doctor.

He predicted Kentucky Derby Winners and one time located lost photos for Pearl by placing his paws on a dresser drawer.

Sam Turns Down Hollywood

Sam was offered $364,000 by a Hollywood Studio to use Jim for one year. Sam refused.

The World’s Tallest Cow Ever – Blosom Dies in 2015

Blossom and owner Patty Hanson
Blossom and owner Patty Hanson

If you are human and your height is 6ft. 4 in. you are considered to tall.   Can you imagine being that size and having a cow the same size as you?

In 2015, the world’s tallest cow of all time died. Her name is Blosom and she is in the Guinness World Records book.

Blosom received a lot of attention for being the world’s tallest cow – EVER!

Sad Accident

In May, 2015, Blosom had a leg injuiry from which she did not recover. Blosom lived on a farm in Orangeville, in the USA state of Illinois.   Her owner was Patty Hanson who loved her and said, “The funny thing about Blosom was how unaffected she was by all the attention that seemed to surround her. As long as she had her oats, and daily chin rubs and ear scratches, life was good.”

I am wondering how Blosom had her chin rubbed? I guess this was done when she was sitting down.

Blosom’s Mom and Dad

Patty Hanson has said that Blosom was the daughter or calf of a normal sized bull and cow. Her owner just could not believe the size thatBlosom became.

Guinness World Records

Editor-in Chief, Craig Glenday, said: “We hold our tallest animals at Guinness World Records in an extremely high regard due to their uniqueness and rarity in finding.

“We were devastated when we heard the news of Blosom’s death as she was such a friendly and gorgeous animal and her owner equally as wonderful and took such great care of her.

“She is definitely one of the standout highlights in our upcoming book and we hope the world enjoys seeing the pictures of her.”

The Previously Tallest Cow.

The previous record holder for the tallest cow ever was Mount Katahdin, a Holstein-Durham cross who, from 1906-1910, stood at 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) to the shoulder and had a girth measuring 3.96 m (13 ft). Yet, this cow was not as tall as Blosom.

Blosom the Loved Cow.

Patty treated Blosom just like any other household pet and loved nothing more than spending time with her out in the field.

Orangutangs: Kids Meet One of Our Closest Relatives

    images unknown

Close your eyes, bring an adult or two and friends and hop aboard my magical plane.   I’ll set the GPS for Sumatra and Borneo. Yes, I can wait while you get out a globe or atlas.

Does your map look like mine? Good.unknown images \

Touch down.   We have made a safe landing and when we get out of the magical plane, you will notice a tropical rain forest. It is very hot and it feels humid or sticky.   Listen and watch.   High up in the trees shaggy, red-haired orangutans are bending the branches to make a comfortable matress of leaves and twigs.   Some are pulling down braches to make a roof in case it rains. This is why it’s called a rainforest – it rains often.

Wow, look at that big Adult Ape!

He is a male and he weighs 220 pounds that’s 100 kilograms and often people weigh this much, too.   They are the largest tree apes. See how they use their arms to swing from branch to branch.

On the ground, orangutans walk on all fours.

Orangutans find their food in the trees where they live. More than half their diet consists of fruit. They also eat nuts, bark, and other parts of plants and trees. Every once in a while they eat insects such as ants and termites, as well as bird eggs.

Orangutans find the water they need for drinking up in the trees—in hollows, on leaves, or even on their own fur after a rain. Trees are essential to every aspect of the orangutans’ world. The cutting down of trees—deforestation—has landed this species on the endangered species list.

 Our Close Relatives

The orangutan is one of humankind’s closest relatives – in fact, we share nearly 97% of the same DNA! The word orangutan comes from the Malay words ‘orang hutan‘, meaning ‘human of the forest‘.

Indonesian Village: Getting to School Can be Very Dangerous

flag of Indonesia
flag of Indonesia

If you are a student living in the village of Sanghiang Tanjung, Indonesia, you will face heavy flooding during certain years.

Three suspension bridges collapsed and students not wanting to face a 30 minute walk, decided to cross on a dangerous bridge.

Above is the bridge, would you cross it to get to school?    It is 162 metre or 486 feet long.

Indonesia: A Very Big Country

Naturally, not every student in Indonesia has problems such as crossing dangerous bridges. The country has large cities and towns where students are bused or driven to school.

Indonesia is so big that it takes 12 hours of flying time to get from one part of it (Northern Sumatra) to the other end (West Papua Guinea).

If you were a student in Indonesia you might speak one of two of 700 native languages.

Indonesia has a massive population of over 238 million people, making it the fourth most populous country in the world – right after China, India and the USA.

 Indonesian Animals

As an Indonesian student you would probably have seen unusual animals like the Komodo dragon.   If you live on the island of Sumatra you probably have noticed wild orangutans swinging in the forests around you.

Aesop: The Fox and the Goat: Rewritten for Today’s Youth

A fox fell into a well and could not get out.

A very thirsty goat saw the fox, but asked if the water tasted good. The fox praised the water and the fox suggested that the goat jump in like he did. Thinking only of his thirst the goat jumped in. Now, they were both in trouble.

The fox told the goat that he had a plan that would rescue them both. The fox suggested that if the goat put his front legs outside the well, he would run up his back and get out.

“I will help you get out, too!” promised the fox. Within a minute, the fox was out of the well and running away. The goat yelled, “You promised to help me get out!”

The fox turned and said,

“You foolish fellow! If you had as many brains in your head as you have hairs in your beard, you would never have gone down before you knew that there was a way back out.”

The Story for Today’s Youth:  by Pauline Gallagher

Suzie was bored in high school. She was looking for some excitement and fun. She heard that Kate and her girlfriends were stealing from shops and stores. Suzie said to Kate, “I’d like to have new clothes and things like rings and watches. I want some adventures. My life is boring!”

Kate discussed matters with her girlfriends.

“We have agreed that you go into the new store and put things into your pocket. We will talk to the store owner so that he will not see what you are doing!”

Suzie filled her pockets and when the store owner yelled, “Stop thief!” Kate and her friends walked slowly out the door.

Suzie was arrested and her parents had to pick her up at the police station.

Suzie tried to blame Kate and her friends for running away, but the police officer held up a hand.

“Young lady,” he said, “You did not think out what would happen if you decided to steal. There are consequences to all our actions. Now, you will have a criminal record.”

A Dog’s Prayer for Kids

images-3Hello: Always be gentle and kind to your pet.  They do not always know that they have done something wrong.  They may know a few words, but it is no use yelling at them.  All those extra words are like a foreign language.  Never, never, hit your pet.  Would you like to be hit?  Show them how to do things right.  And remember, they love you and want to do the right thing.    Auntie Pauline.

A Dog’s Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep,

The king-size bed is soft and deep..

I sleep right in the center groove

My human being can hardly move!

I’ve trapped her legs, she’s tucked in tight

And here is where I pass the night

No one disturbs me or dares intrude

Till morning comes and “I want food!”

I sneak up slowly to begin

my nibbles on my human’s chin.

She wakes up quickly,

I have sharp teeth-

I’m a puppy, don’t you see?

For the morning’s here

and it’s time to play

I always seem to get my way.

So thank you Lord for giving me

This human person that I see.

The one who hugs and holds me tight

And shares her bed with me at night!
