Lily Born: Invents the Kangaroo Cup for Grandfather

Lily with her grandfather
Lily with her grandfather

Lily Born looked at her grandfather and noticed how Parkinson’s disease was affecting him. He found it difficult to move and his hands were no longer able to hold cups or mugs. He had shaky movements that made him spill drinks that he was holding.   Lily wanted to help her grandfather and she did. She invented what has been named as the Kingaroo Cup.  She did this in pottery class and she showed it to her dad, who is an inventor.

Having a Good Idea, but Needing Money

Lily, her family and friends contacted KICKSTARTER that is a fund raiser site that helps people with good ideas. Lily raised just over the $6,000 (£3,540) she needed for production in 30 days.

What is the Kangaroo Cup?

The Kangaroo Cup
The Kangaroo Cup

Lily’s plan produced the first Kangaroo cup but it was ceramic. It was very stable with its three legs. However, the first cups were ceramic which meant that they could chip or break easily.   The next step would be to produce a plastic Kangaroo cup. That would cost a lot more money. Lily, family and friends went back to KICKSTART. They showed the ceramic design and how great the cup would be for people with shaking hands. KICKSTART was impressed particularly when the design would be plastic, stackable and come in beautiful colours. Another thing that impressed the people of KICKSTART was that the cup was that it didn’t splash or needed a coaster.

Great at 11 Years of Age

Thanks to 11 year old Lily, older people and people with Parkinson’s disease are holding her cup. Her idea eventually raised of $25,000 or (£14,740) which is British money.

Did Lily Have Heroes in Her Life?

Lily has been interviewed many times. She lives in Chicago, USA.

Her mom and dad are her heroes. She has watched her dad build many things to help people. Her dad is an inventor, so I guess inventions run in the family. Her mom is a police officer who is called upon to negotiate (talk) with criminals who are often holding hostages. She has watched the love of her grandmother. She is the wife of the man with Parkinson’s disease and Lily’s grandfather.

Lily’s Thinking

Lily’s invention succeeded and was recognized. However, she states that if she had only invented ten (10) Kangaroo cups, she would have helped TEN people. Now, she helps hundreds.   I agree with Lily, if we can help even ONE person, by a smile or a friendly word, then we have made the world a better place. You can do it!   Pauline

Good Breakfast- Makes For a Good Day!

unknown-2 Breakfast, there are two words here – break and fast.   We break the fast (not eating) from the time we went to bed until the time we wake up. Our body is like a car, we run out of gas/petrol and need to fuel up.

Think of it this way, one of your parents or guardians does not put gasoline/petrol into the car before going to work in the morning. The car needs energy to work and this is the same with the human body.

When I was a kid, I couldn’t eat any food until an hour or so after I got out of bed. I would make a peanut and banana sandwich.   I ate this upon arriving at school. As soon as I ate, I could feel the energy coming into my mind.

Here is an idea for an easy to make breakfast.

  • pinch salt and pepper
  • 1 English muffin
  • pat butter
  • slice of cheese (optional)

Puff, The Magic Dragon: Imaginative and Delightful

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
in a land called Honnah Lee
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff, oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
in a land called Honnah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
in a land called Honnah Lee

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff’s gigantic tail
Noble kings and princes would bow whene’er they came
Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name, oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
in a land called Honnah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
in a land called Honnah Lee

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane
Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave, oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
in a land called Honnah Lee

Zeus: He was Once the World’s Tallest Dog

“Are you still hungry?”

Zeus was the father of the gods in Ancient Greece, and his namesake, was a 3 year old Great Dane from Otsego, Michigan, USA.   Zeus, unfortunately, died last year, but he went on record as the Tallest Dog Ever!

Measuring an incredible 111.8 cm (44 in) from foot to withers, Zeus is the same size as an average donkey.

“My bowl is never full of water!”

Standing on hind legs, he stretches to 7 ft 4 in and towers over his owner Denise Doorlag.

“Zeus was an awesome dog,” said owner Denise. “The only downside was that everything costs more; the food, medicines, transport. We had to get a van to be able to transport him, oh, and if he stepped  on your foot – he left bruises!”

The humongous hound weighed 70.3 kg (155 pounds or 11 stone) and ate around 12 cups of food a day (equivalent to one whole 30-lb bag of food!). Some readers have commented that Zeus looked underfed, but his vet claimed him to be healthy and in good condition.  Many dogs are overfed, and like humans, they are unhealthy.

Denise loved the reaction Zeus got when the family took him out: “The most common thing people asked was:  ‘Is that a dog or a horse?’ and ‘Where’s his saddle?’

“Even my owner is a paparazzi!”

Zeus broke the record of previous record-breaking pooch Giant George, who is 1-inch shorter, which make Zeus the tallest dog ever recorded in history.  Giant George had to hand over his crown, or giant bone, to Zeus.  Now, Zeus has to pass his crown on to the next tallest dog.

Can you see the two ostrich chicks in the picture

Two years ago, the sanctuary rescued a baby elephant that was separated from its mother. It had fallen into a deep hole. Above is a picture of the ellie.  Can you see two ostrich chicks in the picture?  They were separated from their mother.  Pea and Pod seemed to know that this is what had happened to the baby elephant.  The ostrich orphaned chicks stayed with the ellie.

Pea and Pod the Caring Ostrich Chicks.  The ostrich chicks are called Pea and Pod. When two people or animals like each other and stay close, there is a saying that they are like “two peas in a pod.” Pea and Pod acted like nurses or mothers to the injured elephant. The ellie recovered and the three of them became best friends.

Pea and Pod Have Grown Up

Pea and Pod are bigger now.  They welcome and look after new baby elephant arrivals. Pea and Pod have got used to little elephants charging them in fun games.   The baby elephants never hurt the ostriches. In fact, they wrap their trunks around the ostriches and hug them.   In turn, the ostriches act like ‘mother hens’ by putting their wings around the elephants. They treat the baby elephants as if they were their chicks.

Dandelions Have Feelings – Belinda’s Dandelion ebook Against Bullying

Hello:unknown-5 images-5

Do you think that dandelions have feelings?  Many people play music to their plants and flowers.  They tell others that the plants move to the music.  They also believe that the flowers grow better and live longer.

Writing About Belinda’s Dandelion

One summer’s day, I looked out my window and saw row upon row of beautiful yellow flowers.  These were Canadian dandelions.   I live just north of Toronto where there are many lakes, tall trees and even bears!!

As I looked at these dandelions, I wondered why people call them ‘weeds.’ They look like flowers and they are as pretty as flowers.  I also knew that many years ago, pioneer family used dandelions as medicine.

belinda-up-2016

In my mind, I wondered if flowers ever bullied dandelions growing beside them.  Would flowers yell out “you are just a weed!”    This gave me the idea to write a story called “Belinda’s Dandelion.”   It is available as an ebook on Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks and other on line companies.   It has a bonus story with pictures that is called “Fun Facts About Dandelions.”

Tell your parents, teachers, pastor and family members that this is a book about bullying.   I think you will also like the little girl called Belinda.
